Book: The Great Jazz Pianists (Lyons, 1989)

Review
I'm not a piano player (I wanted lessons from the lady across the road when I was young but my mother discouraged me from taking up music for whatever reason...); but I did jazz theory for guitar with the wonderfully talented and patient Geoff Carter once I left home. So reading this informative and readable text was both a pleasure and a positive learning experience: as it filled in so many keys areas about some of the great jazz players. I have already passed it on to my cousin Rob Rowe; and no doubt would like to re-read it someday.

Review
This book was one of those local thrift shop finds that took my interest straight away. Finally, I have a brief and accurate text on how the Hohner Blues Harp and Marine Band harmonicas work... For someone that is not really interested in learning how to play these instruments, that may seem a little strange. But it is the fact that I have accompanied harp players when I have been playing my guitar; and when I have a better understanding of how their instrument works I can apply that knowledge to my playing and my choice of music.
I've seen and browsed through other Harmonica Instruction and Study titles by authors such as Jon Gindick and Steven Manus ; however, I knew that Blues Harp & Marine Band had the information I was seeking about the selection and use of harmonicas for country and blues styles of music.
This book may be forty years old and is just 48 pages and held together with a thick card cover and a couple of staples. It may not last much longer, judging by the number of times I've picked it up and read parts of it over the last couple of weeks. It was worth every penny of my donation.
Other reading of related texts
One of the best introductions to professional harmonica players of the modern era would have to be Kim Field's Harmonicas, Harps, and Heavy Breathers: The evolution of the people's instrument (1995). There are a number of editions of this book: I read it about six years ago when the Hobsons Bay Library (Melbourne, Australia) held a copy of an earlier edition. Unfortunately, they seem to have disposed of this book.
Field, K. (2000). Harmonicas, Harps, and Heavy Breathers: The evolution of the people's instrument. New York, N.Y: Cooper Square Press. ISBN 1461661021 9781461661023.
-- By the way, a great review of Harmonicas, Harps, and Heavy Breathers is on the Brighton (UK) website HarpSurgery; run by harmonica professional and teacher Richard Taylor (RW Steele-Taylor; known as “Wilf” on the HarpSurgery forums). Also look for their annual Harpin' by the Sea festival of harmonica music.
As this book Blues Harp & Marine Band is mostly about the instrument and its operation (as opposed to teaching known songs for the harp), I relate it to my other books on guitars and amps.
-- 2023: Just borrowed this book from the Hobsons Bay Library Altona North branch (APA 7th Edition citation style):
Brocksmith B. Dorfman G. & Lichterman D. (2018). How to play harmonica : a complete guide for beginners (First Adams Media trade paperback). Adams Media.
This is a short (approx 170pp) and accessible book for beginners and enthusiasts of the Mississippi Saxaphone. I won't be going out to buy my first Marine Band; but I have enjoyed reading it and it has taught me a few things along the way (I didn't realise harp note bends were always flat; for guitars, a note bend is to make the note sharp). It also includes little boxes of Harp Tips (playing, care and maintenance) and Harmonica Heroes (men and women).

I didn't realise, when I picked this book up in a rush a day before months of curfews and lockdowns, that the author is based locally. Dennis Gentilin is an articulate storyteller of first-hand experience of significant ethical failures in the banking industry.

. If you're reading this then you may be aware that the Apple Big Sur Update (Nov 2020) is a downright Piece of Shit. There is a major bug in the WiFi app and despite showing you are connected, it will quielty drop your connection and the only way to get it going again is a full system restart. I've seen pathetic newbies and brain dead forum techs trying to tell us old timers to follow a couple of links and it's fixed. I've been dealing with TCP/IP connectivity since 1993 - yup, 27 years - and a couple of boxes ticked doesn't cut it. This thing is wiping your script and inserting its own IP numbers: shades of Windows XP workarounds that didn't work. What is it doing to your DNS? Ignoring it. Wiping any reference to it. Great. Who came up with that feature? And Apple have known about these problems since the Beta Testers brought it to light from about the end of May 2020 onward. If you are looking to download the 12gb Big Sur update: don't. It will break your Mac. It's a fuckup, Jim, that only Apple could get away with while the bootlickers can't get enough of the bullshit from Cupertino. See if you can find a negative amongst any of the media reviews.
Big Sur: the Broken Sewer of operating systems.

It's a fuckup, Jim, that only Apple could get away with while the bootlickers can't get enough of the bullshit from Cupertino. See if you can find a negative amongst any of the media reviews.

Handbook: Truckin' Life Hand Book. 1982/83. (Johnson, Editor-in-Chief, 1982)
Truckin' Life Hand Book. 1982/83
Johnson, M.B. (Ed.) (1982) Truckin' Life Hand Book. 1982/83. Clayfield, Qld: Overdrive Publications.
[ISBN] ISSN 0155-9648
Review:
I've always had a soft spot for big trucks and the technology of long-distance transport rigs. Maybe it goes with the territory of the sort of country music I enjoy; maybe it's the past miles I've put in on long distance work-related journeys.
It's now the middle of 2020 and due to pandemic lockdowns the state of the media has changed considerably. In Australia, previously, there has been a few consumer and trade magazines and newspaper formats devoted to commercial transport, logistics, and freight industries. Just this month one of those titles I regularly sought out, Big Rigs has been closed and its website shut down.
Truckin' Life was one of the first magazine titles devoted to the Australian Trucking and Transport Industries that I knew of. It's glossy colour format magazine has been distributed through newsagents, convenience stores, and fuel stops for many years. I seem to recall I got my copy of the Hand Book from a remote provincial town some distance from our major cities. It was heavily discounted and probably New Old Stock when I bought it: it has probably spent at least thirty years rolling around in the back of whatever car I was driving at the time since its purchase.
So my copy of Truckin' Life Hand Book. 1982/83 is not in very good condition. That's a pity, because it offers a valuable insight into the Australian Trucking Industry at that time in history; and I doubt that there are many copies kicking around in libraries. It has been an inspirational and informative source for me over the years, for anything from tying truckies' knots to tyre maintenance tips to understanding legislation and how that differs between states in our ferderation of states. And the photos of the trucks are first rate. Other reading of related texts

Book: I've been there (and back again) (McKean 2012).
I've been there (and back again)
McKean, J. (2012). I've been there (and back again). Sydney: Hachette Australia.
ISBN: 9780733629310 0733629318
Review:
Slim Dusty would have been 93 today, as I write this entry. He was a consummate showman; but it was his wife and talented musical partner Joy McKean who is the consummate story teller. Possibly my alltime favourite song Lights on the Hill was written by Joy and made famous by Slim. (Joy says Slim liked The Biggest Disappointment best...)This book is one of a number written by Joy about their life and times from Slim's early days trying to get a break into what would become the Australian Country Music business, to becoming the King of the Aussie Country Music; and of the ongoing travelling roadshow that made them famous. It's an easy read, because Joy writes in short, episodic chapters: with a great collection of accompanying photographs and selections of lyrics appropriate to the story.

Kernaghan, L., & Buchanan, C. (2017). Boy from the bush. Sydney, N.S.W. : HarperCollins Australia.
ISBN: 9780733338076 0733338070
Lee Kernaghan was destined to follow in the footsteps of his father Ray Kernaghan who, like Slim and Joy, seemed more at home as an entertainer in a travelling roadshow than putting down roots in a suburban quarter-acre block. With his musical collaborator and book co-author Colin Buchanan (who has also found a niche in writing for children!) and hyper-talented writer and production stalwart Garth Porter, Lee is an excellent story teller in a rocking four-minute song; and his book contains many of the lyrics from his first dozen albums (including the original Greatest Hits compilation). And I should mention, my favourite Kernaghan-Porter-Buchanan song: Baptise the Ute! (also on Ultimate Hits - worth tracking down as your first LK album if you don't have one.). It used to play on my Peugeot 306 CD player just as I hit the Hume Freeway heading south past Yass, when I drove out of Canberra; good memories
Jones, T. (2016). Over the Top and Back. London : Michael Joseph
ISBN 9781405920483 1405920483
Sir Tom loves nothing more than to sit back in a comfy pub with a good cigar, a pint of lager, and good company. “…Tom revisits his past and tells the tale of his journey from wartime Pontypridd to LA and beyond…” and he does it in a way with short, articulate chapters that make you feel as if you are with him in that pub enjoying each others' company. And the man is funny: laugh out loud funny; he no longer takes himself too seriously. I will keep passing around my copy until it needs replacing. (As of April 2021 it looks like that copy has a new home!) Probably my best read of the past year...

Smith, G. (2005). Singing Australian: A history of folk and country music. North Melbourne, Vic: Pluto Press Australia. An interesting read from the same publishers who gave us Buried country: The story of Aboriginal country music: Pluto Press Australia.
Russell, T. (2010). Country music originals: The legends and the lost. NY: Oxford University Press. ISBN: 9780195325096 0195325095
Tony Russell has done an outstanding job of highlighting a range of USA country music artists from the early days of the genre. A great find in our local library that, sadly, seems to have been cancelled from the catalogue (read c2019 May-June).
Seal, G., & Willis, R. (2003). Verandah music: Roots of Australian tradition. Fremantle, W.A: Curtin University Books. An incredible resource; in 128 pages there are 47 articles on individual musicians, bands, and communities of musical talent from throughout Australia, who played from the early 1900's until the early 2000's and beyond. Verandah music is one of those rare op-shop finds I previously knew nothing about, that has now become a valuable resource. It contains two audio CDs to complement the written pieces. It is interesting to note, though, that many of musicians highlighted in this book played accordian or piano-accordian. I only realised this fact after reading books on modern drummers, Hawaiian steel guitar players, and USA blues musicians: where drum and fife had a major early influence.
Travers, J., & Muhoberac, L. (Arr.) Travers, J. (2003). The best of Australian country music (Piano, vocal, guitar). Crows Nest, N.S.W: Warner/Chappell Music.
A good selection of 23 contemporary songs by 16 Australian performers (non-Indigenous) from the early 2000s.
Archer, R. (1980). The Robyn Archer Songbook. Melbourne: McPhee, Gribble Publishers.
Besides the songs the book gives some insight into Ms Archer's life and journey as an iconic Australian performer.
Small, J. (1986). The Judy Small Songbook. Sydney: Orlando Press.
I picked the Archer and the Small songbooks up in very good condition from a local thrift shop in Nov 2020. Note that the ISBN on the back cover of the Small book is wrong...
Ruymar, L., & Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association. (1996). The Hawaiian steel guitar and its great Hawaiian musicians. Anaheim Hills, CA: Centerstream Pub.
I would love to see further work in this niche of musical history and sociology. It is a book written from the author's heart.
Poore, B., & Eicke, J. (1998). Rockabilly: A forty-year journey. Milwaukee: Hal Leonard. Billy Poore's personal history of Rockabilly: A forty-year journey is an interesting and possibly unique book. It has a quirk in the style of writing, though, as it looks like someone may have transcribed long passages directly from audio recordings; I mention this because the style of these passages is more akin to a spoken style with local idioms, rather than journal-style written reflection.
Burt, R. (1986). Surf City / Drag City. Poole [Dorset, UK]: Blandford. This is an era I grew up in...

It is interesting to note, though, that many of musicians highlighted in this book played accordian or piano-accordian. I only realised this fact after reading books on modern drummers, Hawaiian steel guitar players, and USA blues musicians: where drum and fife had a major early influence.

Besides the songs the book gives some insight into Ms Archer's life and journey as an iconic Australian performer.

Book: Big Beat (Weinberg, Santelli 1991)

Review
This is really a book about fifteen drummers: Max Weinberg, the author, journalist, and an articulate historian of those interviewed for the book; and the list of interviewees, below. Mr Weinberg has done a great job assembling some of the best contemporary US and UK drummers of the 1980's and 1990's. I am not a drummer but I have a ton of respect for those who do commit their lives to an extrodinary vocation. I also appreciate what their families and neighbours must have gone through in their formative years!
I feel lucky to have been able to read this book, as my cousin bought it from a cutout sale at our local district library. I have been buying Modern Drummer from the newsstand when I can for about the last three years, as I realised that just focussing on reading magazines about guitars and guitar players was only really telling me a small part about my interest in many things musical.
Bob (Robert) Santelli has also done a great job with editorial and research assistance for Mr Weinberg. From the quality of the text I believe Mr Santelli shows a love of the subject, and a dedication to his craft of writing.

Koster, R. (2002). Louisiana music. Cambridge, MA: De Capo Press. I also borrowed this title from my cousin Rob Rowe and I still haven't made up my mind if it is just a bit of desktop research with a few personal, and unrelated, anecdotes; or if the author really bothered to do some action research in the locations that were written about. Whatever, I hope there are more books about Louisiana music and musicians before long, as I find them fascinating subjects.
Lornell, K. (1993). Introducing American folk music. Madison, Wis.: Brown & Benchmark. For some this book may be a little academic in style; however, I enjoyed it immensely as it filled many gaps in my knowledge about the broad subject of American Folk Music of the 19th and 20th Centuries.
Nettl, B., & Béhague, G. (1973). Folk and traditional music of the western continents. Englewood Cliffs, N.J: Prentice-Hall. A highly detailed academic text from the 1970's detailing folk music rhythms and styles from around the globe. A knowledge of reading music would help to understand some of the examples; but in this age the book would provide a superb foundation for a multimedia work to illustrate the text more comprehensively.
Oliver, P. (1994). Blues fell this morning: Meaning in the blues. Cambridge: Canto. This edition was published in 1994, but the original work was published in 1960. Since these times we have come a long way in our respect for, and knowledge of, people and cultures that are not our own. I hope anyone currently reading this book can accept the fact that it is a product of its time, and not be put off by some of the language and terms used; as it illustrates how poorly many of its subjects were treated in those times. If you love blues music, this is a must-read title.
Johnson, C. N., & Gordon, C. G. (2011). Guitar: The Australian journey. Griffith, A.C.T: Barrallier Books. This is a book I borrowed from our local library and I am glad that I hadn't purchased it without inspection. Its title and synopsis led me to believe this would be a text about luthery (guitar making) in Australia: an overlooked craft. What a disappointment: it is "An Aus. Journey", not "The Aus. Journey"; it is not a book about the diversity and creativeness of Australian luthery. It is a book about one person ordering, specifiying, and receiving his guitar from one luthier. The book was supposed to have a 19-track CD on which examples of guitars from fourteen Australian luthiers, including two companies that export commercial quantities (Maton and Cole-Clark) but the CD had not been available when I checked the shelved book lately (it may be stored elsewhere). I've included this entry to archive Australian writers of music related topics.
McUtcheon, A., Jenkins, J., & Divola, B. (2016). The Music that Maton made: The Australian guitar handmade for the world stage. Melbourne, Vic.: Scribe Publications. Just like The Stratocaster Chronicles one gets the sense that this book was also commissioned as a marketing tool by a company looking to promote its product to the world stage. Disclaimer: I own Maton acoustic-electric guitars and I like their distinct, compressed, acoustic sound; but having borrowed the book from the shire library and read it cover to cover, I am not about to rush out and buy it. I was hoping to read a little more about the history of the business, the technicalities of luthery in Australia (such as using Australian tone woods), and learn a little more about what happens on the factory floor. What I think I got was pull-quotes and interviews sourced elsewhere, usually from street-press or community radio sources. I've included this entry to archive Australian writers of music related topics.

An amazing book if some of the events are true. There is a small note on the page that is known, I believe, in the publishing industry as The Bastard and Colophon Pages that begins "To protect the innocent..." I was in LA and NY in '86 and I don't think too many characters I met could be classed as "innocent"..!

Book: Early Pioneers of Tasmania (Stone 1969)
Early pioneers of Tasmania : a history of Thomas and Ann Stone

There is a lot more history to this book than I have the time to write about at the moment.
Ms Marg Stone was related to my paternal grandmother. She was an advocate for archiving family history and celebrating our ancestors. Margaret (my wife) and I visited her at her home on 10 January 1998, my 48th birthday.
Our family already had a copy of this book we'd obtained when it first came out. She gave me a signed original copy and in it is many handwritten annotations and updates.
I will keep it safe for future generations.
Some background that I will remove in the coming weeks. My father Bill’s childhood homes or there-abouts:
The Long Gully/Ironbark home, known as Hill and Dale.
It's at 92 or 96 Eaglehawk Road Ironbark.
The house at 96 Eaglehawk Road Ironbark is subject to Greater Bendigo Heritage Overlay #490 (painting restrictions)
For #92 go to the street view and there should be a green coloured house behind a big gum tree. It’s about three properties from the British & American Hotel just there in Ironbark. The house at #96 is a little further down the hill (closer to Eaglehawk) and closer to the road. The house was still known as Hill & Dale when we stopped to look at it in the 80s with Bill one trip. It was where Lil moved the kids after they lost Vern as far as I know.
Then there’s the farm at Jarklin. Have a look at the Jarklin East Road, east of the Four Posts Hotel. With these coordinates you may see a small dam (ground tank) on the northern side of the road, a little to the west of the co-ords:
36°16'10.2"S 143°58'48.4"E
-36.269500, 143.980111
Google Maps: PXJJ+52 Jarklin, Victoria
That dam: I think that was the one Bill said was where he used to ride his billy cart. There was a house a little to the east of that I think, also on the northern side of the road. Maybe almost as far east as Wright’s Road. However, it could be the house/s to the west of the small dam (back toward the Four Posts Hotel). But not all the way back to Jarklin. It was tucked behind some trees. If it wasn’t the house he was brought up in, it was the nearest one still standing. Easier to tell if I was back on the ground there; and it doesn’t help that the street view is early or late in the day.
That Clinical Psychiatry book and others. Some of the books I’ve been reading are here: https://m0414533224.blogspot.com/2019/03/book-foundations-of-clinical-psychiatry.html There are many more to add; it’s just some of the more important ones are getting listed first. If you want any let me know. I got a lot uploaded in March 2019 because I’d been meaning to upload the info since January 2019. I add more links and background now. I read ‘em ‘cause if you’re on an exercise bike then you’re a captive audience. I could listen to music but I’d rather stimulate the neurons. Dementia course said 150 minutes of puffing aerobic exercise a week, please; that’s the best antidote they’ve found to ward off dementia. The above will be edited at a later time. 20200130

Therefore, the following list of contents includes all artists listed within the book; the listings may not be in alphabetical order, but they should be in the order they appear within the book. The Worldcat entry for this book seems to have been corrupted with information about another title. My copy of the book consists of 70 articles based on topics and artists of Australian Country Music contemporary to that period (c1990). In the 190 pages of articles, just three pages are devoted to Aboriginal country artists.

Latta, D., & Brennan, P. (1991). Australian country music. Sydney: Random House Australia.
The Worldcat entry for this book seems to have been corrupted with information about another title. My copy of the book consists of 70 articles based on topics and artists of Australian Country Music contemporary to that period (c1990). In the 190 pages of articles, just three pages are devoted to Aboriginal country artists.

Unless otherwise noted all books listed were in my personal library at the time of the first blog posting about the book. Some titles were borrowed from RMIT University libraries during the period 2006-2016, or from Hobsons Bay City Council library.
