Review
It took many years for me to get the real meaning of this song: how Aboriginal women became working companions and de facto wives of the men who took great mobs of cattle across the Australian continent in the late 19th and early 20th century. The men were known as Drovers, also Ringers or Stockmen (USA: Cowboy); the women weren't supposed to be there. But, under the circumstances (and archaic laws: NT, WA) the women, superb at riding horses and handling cattle, had their hair cut and wore men's clothes to be passed off as 'Drover's Boys'.
I was introduced to the recordings of Ted Egan in my teens by my mate Ferg, whom I shall pass this extraordinary book on to. Drover's Boy was one song of Egan's that has remained with me for many years, and it is through my most recent research into more about Outback Lore and Aboriginal history (post Euro colonisation) that I begin to understand the debt we owe to our Indigenous sisters and brothers.
