Review
This is one book I did not hesitate in buying. Since my days working for the State Library of Victoria, where my friend Jacques Kosky steered me in the direction of North Mississippi Hill Country Blues performed by the likes of Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside, I have been a fan of the output of Fat Possum Records. It turns out my cousin has a copy of this book; but even if I had been aware of that fact, this one is a keeper. Originally issued nearly 19 years before I bought it, the copy is in as new condition and I probably paid a premium for that. Never mind.
I finally got to read it one Sunday afternoon. It only took just over an hour to read: most of the text is recording artists' bios. the bios are what they are; a mixture of truth, tropes, fact, fiction, myth and monkey paws... Lines are blurred when people can't even read or write... or afford the pencil and book to write events in.
The book is a bio of photographs. On the copyright page the book is described (for libraries and booksellers) as Photography/Art. The photographer is David Raccuglia; the photographs are mainly monochrome and possibly best described as atmospheric. Sometimes album covers accompany the artist's bio; some photos are full colour; none are out of place.

Book: Champagne (Stevenson, 1986).

Champagne

Stevenson, T. (1986)Champagne. London: Sotheby's Publ.
ISBN 0856673188 9780856673184

Review
The first wine that made me sit up and take notice of wine was an Australian Chardonnay produced by a man obsessed with Cabernet Sauvignon.
My brother Peter had been studying medicine and he along with a couple of friends took a holiday to Sydney and went on a wine buying sojourn to the Hunter Valley. There they met Dr Max Lake and bought some of his wines; when they got back to Melbourne I obtained (I think I had to pay for it) one bottle of either 75, 76 or 77 Lake's Folly Hunter Valley Chardonnay. I probably opened it up as a quaffing wine on a Friday or Saturday night: after imbibing the tipples presented by my family and relatives, or purchasing what was available from limited off licence stores, I couldn't get over the fact so much flavour was present both on the nose and in the glass... Welcome to wine tasting 101.
I do remember that there was a big difference between the flavour of French Champagnes I'd tasted compared to Australian Champagnes. That's what we were still calling sparkling wines in the 1970's and 1980's: Champagne. In the ten years between that revaltory Chardonnay and the purchase of the book Champagne my tastes in wine and liquor had changed somewhat (for the better), and I had learnt to marry good wine and good food. Plus, I was now married.
The book wasn't cheap, about the cost of a bottle of Salon or a couple of bottles of Veuve Yellow Label . It is a great introduction to many facets of Champagne the region, the villages, the vineyards, the growers, the method, the styles, and the governance of the brand.
The book was published for Southeby's Publications by Philip Wilson Publishers Ltd (London); so it may have been a media vehicle used to promote and compare product somewhat like Judith Miller's Antiques Encyclopedia. I read it at least once during an early morning shift on network radio where I had to work like a mad thing for about ten minutes of each hour for the first two hours then sit around waiting for the next tasks or a major fault to occur during that time. That was all before normal office hours began.
I do have at least two other books about Champagne from the dozen or so books I have on wine and winemaking. This book is my most prized possession of the group and I recommend it highly.

Other reading of related texts Dr Max Lake produced a number of books about wine and his obsession of making the greatest Cabernet Sauvignon he thought that Australia could present to the world. I've seen a copy of the data and tables heavy Cabernet: notes of an Australian wineman but I left it on the shelf. I do have two copies of:
Lake, M. (1966). Classic wines of Australia. Brisbane: Jacaranda.
Classic wines of Australia is a great read about the regions, geography, styles, business and taste of Australian wine circa 1966. My father, Bill, would purchase the occasional bottle of red that he would allow us to try with Sunday roast lunch; and I'm sure most of these wines are included in this detailed book.

Review
The Introduction to The Jimmy Buffett Scrapbook probably sums it all up in the following: "Growing Older but Not Up". You can't summarize his output in just one word... Brand? Lifestyle? Escape (from reality)? Happy... maybe. I may have a preference for country, blues and boogie; but I do have the boxed set Boats, Beaches, Bars & Ballads; another compilation; and at least one album from the 90's.
When the other title Tales from Margaritaville... came up for a dollar at an opportunity shop I grabbed it.

Book: Bruce (Carlin, 2013).

Bruce: a biography about Bruce Springsteen.

Carlin, P. A. (2013). Bruce. London: Simon & Schuster.
ISBN 9781471112348

Review
Of the 27 chapters, only the penultimate chapter went into some detail based on an interview with one of the major E-Street bandmembers: saxophinist Clarence Clemons. It was one of Clemons' last interviews before his passing in 2011. This is the one chapter I wish there was more of.
While the book is a good read and appears well researched, the book did not strike me as being as well prepared as Johnny Cash: the life. Especially when the author denigrates the work of journalists and music critics: that strikes me a bit as fanboy indulgence.
It's not all glowing reviews of Springsteen's life and work, however: an incident where he takes to task some roadcrew, described in this edition on p456 that happened around March 18, 2012, shows he is not without personal flaws.

Review
Of all the muso bios I have read recently, this one is the most outstanding in style and content.
Written from an outsider's point of view, the book is nonetheless highly readable and well researched.
It is not overly 'fanboy': the reviews of many of Cash's recorded works are damning.

Book: On the Road with Slim (Elliot 2002)

On the Road with Slim

Elliott, J. (2002). On the Road with Slim. Sydney: ABC Books.
ISBN 0733310508 : 9780733310508

Review
This is a book devoted to documenting the Dusty-McKean musical roadshow from 1992 through 1998 through photographic images shot by John Elliott. There is not a lot of text and I basically read this in an afternoon. For a more comprehensive overview of what it was like being part of the musical roadshow, I would recommend Joy McKean's 2012 book I've been there (and back again).
Appendices include: (1) Slim's Road Songs; (2) Slim's Career Highlights (and life events, 1927-2002); (3) The Official 100 (+3) Slim Dusty Albums; & (4) Slim's Golden Guitar Collection (to 2002). Slim Dusty passed away in 2003, just over a year after this book was published; so these lists are not complete to date.
One chapter I found interesting is Slim's Guitar Players. Seven players are highlighted, including Slim:
  • Slim Dusty (who also played in a band he called his Bushlanders in the 1950's, with Joy McKean and Barry Thornton.)
  • Barry Thornton (with the band 1954-1974)
  • Lindsay Bultler (from 1972)
  • Charley Boyter (from 1975)
  • Ian Simpson (1980's & 1990's)
  • Jeff Mercer (from 1997)
  • Rod Coe (producer and later Bass Player, from 1976)
Other guitarists credited with studio work for Slim Dusty, include: Don Andrews; Phil Emmanuel; Tommy Emmanuel; Stewart French; George Golla; Lawrie Minson; Kelvin Nowlan; Mark Punch; Mick Reid; Alan Rhodes; Keith Urban; & Graham Wardrop.
I've also purchased a couple of books of Slim Dusty tunes:
Slim Dusty Songbook (1984)
ISBN: 0908476132 : 9780908476138 - & -
The Chord Songbook SLIM DUSTY (2007)
ISBN: 1921029560 : 9781921029561
The Chord Songbook (2007) contains 50 songs but is limited to lyrics with suggested guitar chords noted above the words approximately where the chords should be played in relation to the tune. It does list, inside the back cover, nine of the twelve Slim Dusty music books that have been available.
The Slim Dusty Songbook (1984) is a more comprehensive Piano-Vocal-Guitar style of book: with a properly notated melody line above the lyrics, and chord changes written above the stave (these chords can be played by either the piano bass line or by the guitar). There is a small note written in the first person, possibly by Slim or Joy, for each song. There is also a discography toward the back of the book listing 56 Long Play Records, the tracks on each, and a catalogue number. There is also a short section on tips of how to play the songs on guitar, in the 'Slim Dusty' Style.
At the beginning of the book there is a short history and biography on Slim Dusty, Joy McKean, and the travelling roadshow; prepared by Rita Erlich. Throughout this book there are many high quality photographs from Slim's and Joy's early days on the road; of them performing and relaxing; and stock and news feature source photos to complement the book (the photo source credits are at the beginning of the book; except for the picture of the preserved Victorian Railways K153 locomotive probably taken on the main rail line between Melbourne and Albury, shown on page 93). A great addition to my collection.

Review
Clocking in at 547 pages... I'm not surprised that it took almost six years from purchasing this book to finally picking it up and reading it. James Fox, as Richards' co-writer, has done a fantastic job of creating such an easily read and engaging book with a fascinating subject. I'd love to sit down to a meal of Keith's bangers and mash recipe (p.525); and I'm glad to see he took a tiny feline waif into his menagery (see the photo of 'Voodoo' and Keith on p.452, this edition).

Book: The Gospel According to Luke (Lukather, Rees, 2018)

The Gospel According to Luke

Lukather, S., & Rees, P. (2018). The Gospel According to Luke. London: Constable.
ISBN 9781472126429 1472126424

Review
This is a book my cousin Rob Rowe handed to me as I walked out the door from his place on the way to the gym one morning. I've never been a fanboy of the band TOTO or the style of music it seems to be remembered for. I've seen some videos of Steve Lukather annoying his neighbours that amused me; but made me glad I'm not living next door to him. I've read a number of columns he's written for various guitar magazines, yet never thought I'd go out and buy a book if he wrote it.
When I got into The Gospel According to Luke I could hardly put it down. Paul Rees is a music journalist and the cowriter/ghostwriter for a number of music biographies: Rees does a fantastic job of eliciting some of the amazing details of Steve Lukather's life from a young age, as a guitar prodigy, in and out of bands, and as a musician performing for LA's famed Wrecking Crew.
I wish more music bio's would read like this... I highly recommend it.

Review
The first long-playing 12" record I remember buying was Joe Cocker's career-pinnacle live performances captured on the Mad Dogs and Englishmen double album. I'd just been paid at my new part-time job selling radios and stereos in a department store; for good measure I picked up Cocker Happy as well before the store closed for the weekend.
That was around 1975. Forty-seven years later I find out that the release of Mad Dogs was in support of a promotional formula used by a USA recording industry heavyweight: Dee Anthony would get his artist (or band, such as Humble Pie) to build credibility by touring extensively (possibly as a follow-up to a studio album) then release a live album (or double album, in the case of Mad Dogs) and take it from there (Goodman, p.308).
Jon Landau tried to emulate that methodology with Bruce Springsteen following the release of Born to Run (Goodman, p.296). If you'd like to know how that went, I'd suggest you try and get hold of a copy of The Mansion on the Hill and find out, yourself. You see, Landau was a celebrated writer for Rolling Stone Magazine; but he never mentioned his conflict of interest as a music promoter and manager when he reviewed artists that he managed. Just as well the only article by Landau in my copy of The Rolling Stone Illustrated History of Rock & Roll (1976) book (pp198-201) is about Otis Redding (Landau is reported by Goodman to have said of Redding that "...his personal credo was 'make that buck'..." (Goodman, p.303).
The copy of The Mansion on the Hill I saw a number of times at a local thrift store, but left on the shelf because I wasn't certain its subject matter would really interest me. Once I picked it up and began to read it I found it hard to put down. A lot of information - names, relationships, artists, recordings, events - comes thick and fast; it never stops being informative. I've passed my copy on but will look forward to getting it back as I think it will need to be read again, in time. It's been a highlight read among a couple of real rubbish music books I've read in the last few months.

Review
"Stariway to Heaven" is not the only mistake the editors of this guitar jock mag have made over the years: this book has plenty (What month did Mr Clapton's feature run in?). But still... it is a simple and enjoyable read. I learnt a few things: such as the first edition is Vol 1 #7 (because it came out in July) and it has run with 6, 12, and 13 editions a year as its popularity grew. After 35 years of dedicated subscription to stablemate Guitar Player magazine, I took up a subscription to Guitar World about three years ago because it was cheap, and I treated it as a disposable commodity. However, I've enjoyed each edition and have been storing them for later reference.

Duchossoir, A. R. (1983). Guitar identification: How to date the guitars made by Fender, Gibson, Gretsch and Martin. Milwaukee, WI: Hal Leonard Publ. Co.

Of all the books in this "series" this is one of the shorter books. This may actually be a little surprising: because the text covers at least ten distinct families of basses from the early 1950's: Precision Bass (including Telecaster Bass); Jazz Bass; Bass VI; Bass V; Mustang Bass; Musicmaster Bass; Bullet Bass; Lead Bass; Coronado Bass; Katana Bass; and, Performer Bass. Despite providing only a brief description of each bass family and the variants within up to 1990, it does a good job of providing a thorough overview of each instrument and provides clear illustrations of most of the basses described.
It's a pity this text is not found in more librarys; but it is available online as a freely accessible document.
One final note: The Fender Bass book may be cited with the term "S.l.: Exclusively distributed by Hal Leonard". Thanks to the Collins Dictionary Online I have learned that "s.l." is a latin term: "sine loco". "Sine loco" means "without place (of publication)"; there is not much information within the book that relates to publication, so this may be correct. However, I have included as much information as I can from various sources: as well as my copy of the book. (The term "s.n." stands for "sine nomine": that means "without a name" and refers to the publisher's name not being known.)
