Book: Buried Country: The Story of Aboriginal Country Music (Walker 2000)

Buried Country: The story of Aboriginal Country Music.

Review:
I will recommend this book highly as a reference as it exposes a considerable lack of accessible published information in this realm. There are many reasons for this: of particular note is the fact that Australian Aboriginals were not accepted as Australian Citizens until a referendum in 1967 gave Indigenous Australians the same rights of inclusion under the constitution, as the predominantly white hegemony. Also, there were significant differences in how the cultures, of European descent and of Aboriginal descent, recorded their histories. European cultures had archived their histories in print and visual mediums (and later, by recorded electronic media) whereas Aboriginal cultures recorded their histories by evanescent oral media and by visual media open to interpretation.
Tracing the history of some of the better known Aboriginal Country Music Artists is, for me, very topical. The book starts extremely well with a thoroughly researched and documented article about one of our most recognisable Australian Aboriginal Performing Artists: Jimmy Little. However, I found other articles throughout the book lacking the research rigour and editorial finesse of the first article.
Many of the articles seemed to rely on unsubstantiated opinion from the author, especially regarding the ability or the potential ability of the cited artists. Because many of these artists were never given the opportunity to record, or the recordings that do exist are of poor quality, we may never know what the artists were capable of; therefore the claims remain unsubstantiated. But, as a whole, the book is highly thought provoking. Therefore, I hope it leads to more works in this area before this valuable knowledge is lost.

Smith, J. (1984). The Book of Australian country music. Gordon, N.S.W: Berghouse Floyd Tuckey Pub. Group.. The Book of Australian Country Music by James "Jazzer" Smith (1984) is possibly the primary reference for Buried Country. My copy of The Book of Australian Country Music is listed with ISSN 0814-3730; that indicates the Publisher considered the title part of a series. However, I do not believe subsequent volumes were issued. The book consists of 24 articles in the first 230 pages on topical matters; the following 134 pages are biographies of known artists and include late addenda. I will try to give a complete review in 2020 of this important work.

Latta, D., & Brennan, P. (1991). Australian country music. Sydney: Random House Australia.
The Worldcat entry for this book seems to have been corrupted with information about another title.
My copy of the book consists of 70 articles based on topics and artists of Australian Country Music contemporary to that period (c1990). In the 190 pages of articles, just three pages are devoted to Aboriginal country artists.
Smith, G. (2005). Singing Australian: A history of folk and country music. North Melbourne, Vic: Pluto Press Australia. . An interesting complementary read from the same publishers who gave us Buried Country: Pluto Press Australia. I read this book in 2018 and will report on it in 2020.

Seal, G., & Willis, R. (2003). Verandah music: Roots of Australian tradition. Fremantle, W.A: Curtin University Books. An incredible resource; in 128 pages there are 47 articles on individual musicians, bands, and communities of musical talent from throughout Australia, who played from the early 1900's until the early 2000's and beyond. Verandah music is one of those rare op-shop finds I previously knew nothing about, that has now become a valuable resource. It contains two audio CDs to complement the written pieces. It is interesting to note, though, that many of musicians highlighted in this book played accordian or piano-accordian. I only realised this fact after reading books on modern drummers, Hawaiian steel guitar players, and USA blues musicians: where drum and fife had a major early influence.

Poore, B., & Eicke, J. (1998). Rockabilly: A forty-year journey. Milwaukee: Hal Leonard. Billy Poore's personal history of Rockabilly: A forty-year journey is an interesting and possibly unique book. It has a quirk in the style of writing, though, as it looks like someone may have transcribed long passages directly from audio recordings; I mention this because the style of these passages is more akin to a spoken style with local idioms, rather than journal-style written reflection.

Slim Dusty would have been 93 today, as I write this entry. He was a consummate showman; but it was his wife and talented musical partner Joy McKean who is the consummate story teller. Possibly my alltime favourite song "Lights on the Hill" was written by Joy and made famous by Slim. This book is one of a number written by Joy about their life and times from Slim's early days trying to get a break into what would become the Australian Country Music business, to becoming an icon of the Aussie CM and the travelling roadshow that made them famous. It's an easy read, because joy breaks it down into short episodic chapters, with a great collection of accompanying photographs and selections of lyrics appropriate to the story.

Review
I regularly read books about musical instruments (including electric guitar amplifiers and effects), musicians, and music genres. In the past I have mainly read books about popular and folk music styles including blues, country, rockabilly, surf and folk (Americana). We can now add a history of Heavy Metal, including: Proto Metal; Thrash; Grunge; British Steel; Crossover/Hardcore; Industrial; Nu Metal; Death Metal; Black Metal; Metal Core; Grind/Grindcore; and Millenial Metal. Crazy stuff... I've got two books on US Blues and one on Australian Roots sitting on the shelf to bring me back down to earth. But I admit this book, Louder than Hell, was so well written and so full of information it should remain in my library to read again someday.

Book: Guide to the psychiatry of old age (Ames Chiu Lindesay Shulman 1e 2010)

Guide to the psychiatry of old age
Ames, D., Chiu, E., Lindesay, J., & Shulman, K. I. (2012). Guide to the psychiatry of old age. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.
ISBN 9780521681919

Almost another month slips past without me uploading more reviews; but, I have been busy and there are at least three books I've been reading since I last wrote (four books if you count Toby the Tram Engine: I will!).
The title I am acknowledging here - Guide to the psychiatry of old age - is an excellent resource in all of 136 pages... You learn about the three D's: Dementia, Delerium, and Depression; what differentiates them from each other and how they may affect comorbidities (other diseases or conditions). You will also gain some insight into how these diseases will affect older people as against younger patients; in reasonably easy to read language. The references are few, but highly focussed and reputable. Highly recommended.

Foundations of clinical psychiatry (Bloch & Singh 3e 2007): reviewed earlier. As a pair of books to learn more about mental health related issues, especially here in Australia, I would highly recommend Foundations of Clinical Psychiatry along with Guide to the psychiatry of old age.

Book: Project Evaluation and Feasibility Analysis for Hospitality Operations (Baker 2000)

Project Evaluation and Feasibility Analysis for Hospitality Operations (1e 2000)
Baker, K. (2000). Project Evaluation and Feasibility Analysis for Hospitality Operations. Pearson Education, Frenchs Forest NSW.
ISBN 9781862504899

Review:
An Australian author who has a generous list of references at the end of each chapter. I am finding it a very useful and quick read; it also challenges the reader to think beyond the norm, e.g.: instead of just preparing a feasibility study, also prepare an un-feasibility study. Data obtained for many such studies is often locked in the moment; have you taken into account future trends, especially a little action research on the effects of the outcome/s of your project? (See Ch1, p14 The 'Unfeasibility Study'; Ch2, p25 The Dialectical Inquiry Method). Just because it is aimed at the Hospitality Industries doesn't mean that its concepts and methodologies aren't applicable to other situations.
My concerns? Many of the quotes and theory is taken from Kotler (1994) that I have also read and reviewed. Like the government, public service, public sector, tourism and media sources that are used as references I have my concerns about their accuracy and reliability. Having worked in these industries I know many of my colleagues fail to check the rigour of their sources; therefore these references, almost none of which have been peer-reviewd, should not be relied upon for fact. But they are a useful pointer to further research...
Otherwise, the book is highly recommended before reading a more comprehensive source; or as an adjunct to project management, governance and auditing text books.

Book: Stakeholder politics (Boutilier 1e 2009)

Stakeholder politics (1e 2009).
Boutilier, R. (2009). Stakeholder politics: Social capital, sustainable development, and the corporation. Stanford, Calif: Stanford Business Books. ISBN 9781906093150

Review:
It took me a few weeks to get through my previous book Modern Auditing and Assurance Services. I am a captive audience while I am on the exercise cycle at the gym, so I may as well read topics I normally wouldn't seek out, like: auditing; chronic illness or stakeholder relations.
The Worldcat subject categories listed for Boutilier's book include: Corporate governance; Social capital (Sociology); Social networks; Social responsibility of business; and, Sustainable development. Even though Boutilier is ultimately trying to sell you a corporate service based around 3DSC (Three Dimensional Social Capital; see p.12) his work highlights how organised groups create myth around their concept of the situation to attract media and supporter attention, often to the detriment of a corporate entity. Boutilier articulates some of the tools and methods he uses to identify these stakeholders and their methods; and that, I find, very interesting. He supports this book with very good research from a wide range of credible authors. I'll be looking forward to following up on Boutilier's research.

Book: Modern auditing & assurance services (Leung Coram Cooper 3e 2007)

Modern auditing & assurance services
Leung, P., Coram, P., & Cooper, Prof. B. J. (2007). Modern auditing & assurance services (Third ed.). Milton, Qld: John Wiley & Sons Australia, Ltd.
ISBN 9780470810910 0470810912

Review
This book is a big, long read. It's almost 700 pages and I seem to be able to read about 24-27 pages in a 70 minute period. There is a bright side to all this reading: for the student of auditing there are quizzes and case studies in each chapter and also at the end of each chapter - and I can skip those! On the days I am reading Modern auditing & assurance services (3e.) I am also indulging in a library book I happened across: Tony Russell's Country music originals : the legends and the lost; or my own copy of Louder than hell : the definitive oral history of metal.
The early chapter Ethics in Modern auditing & assurance services (3e.) contains one of the best descriptions and differentiations between ethics, morals, and philosphy, that I have read. The rest of the book is giving me a thorough understanding of the various standards of auditing, and how the role of auditors and auditing has developed over time. A pity there isn't a similar need for thorough auditing in communications...
...I finished this book in late July and I do believe I learned a lot from it: including a strong respect for the people who have to carry out the thorough process of auditing. I hope to get the time to add a few more notes here as I used a lot of sticky notes to highlight text throughout the book; and the glossary at the end is a welcome addition.
This is not something I would normally read to complete my evening, like the music, guitar and amp books I like to turn to before turning in. But it has given me a lot of insight into the evolving process of Auditing and Assurance.

Book: Using Moodle (Cole & Foster 2e 2008)

Using Moodle: [teaching with the popular open source course management system](2e)(2008).
Cole, J. R., & Foster, H. (2008). Using Moodle: [teaching with the popular open source course management system](Second edition). Sebastopol, CA: O'Reilly Community Press.
ISBN 9780596518516 059651851X 9780596554989 0596554982

In late August 2011 I had a meeting with two academic gentlemen who would go on to offer me an unusual, yet fulfilling job. I was to act as an assistant project manager for the UNSW School of Business at ADFA to transfer their 23 postgraduate courses from a legacy Learning Management System (LMS) to an innovative, new, open source Content Management System (CMS). The old LMS was called Olive; the new CMS is called Moodle.
The UNSW is the University of New South Wales and ADFA is the elite Australian Armed Forces Training College: the Australian Defence Force Academy. I was there for nearly six months and it was an extraordinary experience. There was such a sense of respect and camaraderie from the defence forces staff and defence forces students that I have never experienced in any other work environment. Centrally placed in all this was a university where workplace politics was being played out amongst the academics, administration, and support staff; much like government bureaucracies I've worked in. Then there was also the mix of cultures from the mainly overseas students who were higher academic candidates, such as the brilliant Egyptian PhD candidate who was given a part-time role to assist me with content creation and the mundane task of transferring content files from the old system to the new one (...but hey, he was young and he needed the money!).
At the conclusion of the job interview I was handed a downloaded and printed PDF file of Using Moodle: teaching with the popular open source course management system (2nd ed.). I was given a week to learn it as the project manager was almost ready to travel down from Sydney to Canberra to begin the five month change program: moving the 23 courses that made up the Master of Business program from the old system and training the 29 academic staff how to use Moodle as technical staff would no longer be in control of content, as they were with the old Olive LMS. Except for a change of circumstances: at my next meeting with the UNSW staff members who would go on to become good friends and mentors, I was informed that the project manager had fallen off a ladder while gardening and broken her leg so badly that she would not return to work for at least six months: could I take over and deliver the change management project?
Moodle is not hard to get your head around if you have been using personal computers for as long as I have: at that stage I had more than 25 years' experience with PCs and trying to fix broken software and bad programming. If you can use content management systems like Wordpress or Blogger, or if you use MS Office software and have now transferred most of your files to Onedrive or back your files up to Dropbox, then using Moodle is not that difficult.
Although Moodle is based around four software components working together, known as LAMP for Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP, you can download a working copy for Windows or Mac environments and try it out there. I have recently downloaded and set up a copy of one of the latest stable versions of Moodle to run on a Windows 10 laptop (though my attempts to set it up on a Windows 7 laptop have not worked, even though I had a copy running in 2011 on a Windows 7 lite Netbook) just to remind me what Moodle does. And although the copy of Using Moodle: teaching with the popular open source course management system (2nd ed.) is over 10 years old, it is still relevant enough to assist with setting up the software, then adding courses, before having to turn to online sources for help.

Book: Keeping archives (Ellis 2e 1993)

Keeping archives (2e 1993)
Ellis, J.(Ed.) (1993). Keeping archives (Second ed.). Port Melbourne, Vic: D W Thorpe.
ISBN 9781875589159

When I worked at ABC Radio Melbourne (1983-1994) some kind souls used to leave books that were no longer required for programme reviews at strategic points on the landings of the old Waverley Court building that housed 3LO and 3AR staff. This must have been one of the last books I was able to acquire, given its date of publication.
At the time I got it I equated archiving with the work of book and record librarians. As time has moved on it has come to mean so much more to me: with the research work I did for my Master of Arts; for archiving personal and computer files; and for Electronic Document and Records Management Systems that are now mandatory for all Australian government departments.
As a species we keep a lot of records; but we don't archive them well because most of us don't know or care to learn a few basic rules of archiving. This book is a useful reference for anyone working in (or whose hobby is) archive administration.

Book: Managing enterprise content: a unified content strategy. (Rockley, Kostur, & Manning 1e 2005).

Managing enterprise content: a unified content strategy. (first edition)(2005)
Rockley, A., Kostur, P., & Manning, S. (2005). Managing enterprise content: a unified content strategy. Indianapolis, Ind: New Riders.
ISBN 9780735713062

A fascinating book when I first read it; and one that follows on as an adjunct from my previous entry Internal Controls and Corporate Governance (3e 2009).
Its thesis, or perhaps its premise, is that (large) corporate (and government) entities would do well to adopt Content Management Systems (CMS), Workflow Management Systems (WMS), XML authoring and metadata when creating and managing content. Why should your sales department tell your clients one thing, when the manufacturing branch says another? Shouldn't the organisation speak with one voice?
The tools the authors wrote about were just becoming widely available; no more hand-coding HTML like I once did; or waiting 45 minutes for a two-page MS Word document to have tags parsed by a proprietary programme. But content management, blogging and web publishing was just in its infancy, and social media needed simple tools for simple people to publish online. XML fell by the wayside and a patched-up form of HTML was embraced by the masses. Who bothers to add metadata when Google finds your website, anyway?

Review
Not exactly a title that would be on most people's reading lists: but I am learning a lot from this book even if it is nearly ten years old. Data is gold and it is being traded in dark places. The more we rely on access to information, the more n'er-do-goods can make money from trading in other peoples' data. This book gives some insight into how and why protecting data is imperative in this era.

Review
A quick review because I'll need to come back and edit... For me this was a fascinating read: human communications in public relations, marketing, reporting (business; government; managerial...), news (media), etc., is based on making others aware of a topic. I've come from a media and communications background, therefore I was initially trained in the methods used by media to raise awareness. But how do we really inform others? Elsewhere I've listed books on learning, especially adult learning (androgogy), but this is a book about teaching methods and when to use them. From that perspective the book makes a lot of sense to me.
I found the Summary Chart for each chapter a useful roadmap. Each Chart begins with a Syntax of the model described in the chapter, the Social System it is used in, Principles of Reaction, and Support System. I hope to populate the rest of this page with a list of all the Summary Charts.
In the meantime, I have a train I have to catch!

While I have yet to finish the first two books in this list [...March 2020] I did read the title Understanding curriculum: The Australian context. While it was an interesting read for someone outside the school education system, I found the text lacking in academic and research rigour. The book was more of a manifesto written "from the trenches" and its thesis is that all Australian primary and secondary scool education should be teacher-devised content and curriculum: perhaps written in reaction curriculum prepared by subject matter experts and professionals outside the (then) unionised school teaching system.

Forty Studies That Changed Psychology (7e 2015)

I am reading two other books (one about Models of Teaching; the other about Development of Moral Behaviour) and this little book has become invaluable due to the readings suggested in the other books. It unlocks so much; yet it is not an omnibus of the original studies. For me it is better because it is a resource of discussion and summary of the original research presented in a very first person, humorous style (if you don't mind the off-beat, academic style of Hock's humour!). I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the Studies once I've completed my other two books.

Website: Worldcat is my friend

Worldcat search engine
www.worldcat.org

I've been using the OCLC - Library of Congress - Worldcat database of media since the early 2000's.
When I told my dear friend and qualified librarian at the ADFA library that it was my secret source for citations, she rolled her eyes and shook her head...
Okay, Worldcat is a publicly modifiable wiki. And that means garbage in, garbage out.
Example: You can get an APA citation style for the books. So the APA Publication Manual should be entered in the APA style, right?
How come, then, there are hundreds or thousands of entries for the same edition of each book depending on the year?
...And a note on the Law Citation book: APA is good for humanities and social issues, but if you ever have to do policy or law work for government it's good to know your law citation, just in case!

Following my time with Skills.net at the State Library of Victoria, being a tourist on a government wage and traveling all over the state, meeting people and showing them how to access and use the World Wide Web, I settled down for a short while as a community trainer working with seniors, single mums, disadvantaged, unemployed, and refugees. They were all lovely people to work with.
If there is one book I would have like to taught to them, and anyone over the age of 16 years, it is this one. Because sooner or later you will have to deal with government and govt. paperwork; and working through this book gives you an idea of what to expect.
My ownership of some of the other books goes back to my days as a trainee working for ABC Radio, because trying to push paperwork through a public service system is like trying to pick a miscreant sesame seed from a kilo tin of honey...

Contexts of nursing: An introduction (2e 2006)
Daly, J., Jackson, D. B., & Speedy, S. (Eds.)(2006). Contexts of nursing: An introduction (Second edition). London: Elsevier.
ISBN 9780729537469

Contexts of Nursing is a multi-purpose book: it examines the Western History of Nursing; it looks at the current and future place of Nursing in the health system; and it examines the internal and external culture of Nursing as an organised group and as a profession. It is a very interesting read.
One area I found interesting: since 2010 I have acted as an unpaid carer of ageing relatives for long periods. Besides my housekeeping and financial duties of care and advocacy, I had to perform duties long associated with nursing. This is one method that the government is using to save money on the care of the aged as we live longer: getting family members to perform unpaid carer duties. There comes a point where carers need to let the professionals step in and take over: after reading this book, and if I had my time again, I'd probably let properly trained and paid nurses take over sooner.

When I joined the Skills.net team (Adrian & Sandie) in Vicnet at the State Library of Victoria in 1998, we were working toward a number of goals. The Internet and WWW were still relatively new, being in their first decade; modems to acces the Internet were still dial-up; and access could be very expensive outside Australian capital cities. It's hard to believe, but the beginnings of online social media were still at least five years away...
Our goals included: equitably funding community groups to train adults to access the WWW and use email (Skills.net); making sure disadvantaged members of our state received access to training and low-cost access to the web; community building with this new medium; and enabling change in communities.
For someone who'd been used to working in broadcast radio, a medium that had been going for over 80 years, understanding the communities I'd be working with and their needs was a lot to get my head around. So books on building communities, change in communities, and how to grow online communities, were sought out and read when I had the time. Because much of my time from 1998 to 2004 was spent out on the road visiting community groups across the state.

I got the Philosophy book first as I had returned to study with a full-time load and a lot of catching up to do. Ethics and the Media was one of four subjects in the first semester of my Masters degree and I needed to be able to get my head around some of the basics and the philosophical background of ethics. When the other two books came up in a second-hand bookstore not long after I was keen to snap them up.

And being the project manager of a $1.3m government information roadshow meant that I had to make, lease or buy everything from an internet-enabled caravan to the six forms of insurance to cover the caravan being out on the road. Therefore, reading these books on Purchasing and Supply Management, Contract Law (Aus) and Logistics has helped me understand how these systems work; the books enabled me to talk to professionals in these fields in language they understand; and they've given me a good understanding of the options of which contractto use when planning involves signing contracts for making, leasing, or buying goods or services.

When I worked for ABC Radio in the 1980s and 1990s it was going through major technological changes. TV moved from film-based projection to analogue video tape in the 1980s. Then radio began the transition from analogue content capture, links and transmission, to digital audio. That meant once a recording was captured the editing and duplication on digital could take a matter of seconds or minutes, when it used to take hours or even days. And I was helping to introduce it. So the trainer needed training and Laird was one of the books I was given to read. I got my copy, of the second edition, around 2006.

When I work I write. Reports. Plans. Speeches. Presentations. Articles. TV and Radio Scripts. Letters.
And I read: some of what I read is about writing; and some is about communicating. Whatever... These are some of my favorite books on writing, and more will be added later. Just as well the Oxford book is a good read!

Book: Exploring corporate strategy (Johnson Scholes 6e 2002)

Exploring corporate strategy (6e 2002)

Johnson, G., & Scholes, K. (2002). Exploring corporate strategy: [text and cases](sixth ed.). Harlow: Prentice Hall/Financial Times.

I first read this book while studying organisational change management as part of my Master of Arts (Communications) degree circa summer of 2006-2007 with a copy from the RMIT library. Shortly after finishing my Masters I picked up my copy and have referred to it on a couple of occasions since when planning strategic change.
All projects and businesses need plans: with a goal, a strategy, tactics, a SWOT analysis, communications and stakeholders; even a four-page plan is better than no plan. (Unless the plan is complete rubbish, like when I had to come in and fix the work of someone in government on a major change management project who had been trying to use an IAP2 community decision making model for the introduction and roll-out of asset management software to 1500 state-run government schools. Pick the right tool for the job: A tradesman doesn't use a hammer for cross-head screws, you must use the right style of plan for the job!) Therefore I recommend this book highly; whether you are involved in a small club, with three to four staff, or a major organisation with thousands of staff across many sites. Worth holding on to.

Block, P. (2000). Flawless consulting: A guide to getting your expertise used (Second ed.). San Francisco: Jossey-Bass/Pfeiffer. Did I really pay AUD75 for this book in 2001? The Aussie dollar must have been flatlining... Yes, it is a good and thought-provoking read, but it is not a peer-reviewed text that you must add to your collection.
Peppers, D., Rogers, M., & Dorf, B. (1999). The one to one fieldbook: The complete toolkit for implementing a 1 to 1 marketing program. New York: Currency Doubleday. I used to buy the business magazines Fast Company and Strategy and Business; and like Flawless Consulting this book came highly recommended from readers of those magazines. But if I could only take one book, between Exploring Corporate Strategy, Flawless Consulting, or One-to-One, to an island to read, it would be Exploring Corporate Strategy. Okay, they all serve different, but related, purposes. However, Exploring is the one book of the three that I keep going back to.
