Review
Author Murray Engleheart (cf) has, for me, done a fine job of describing the growth and decline of a number of East Coast bands that were very important to Australian Rock and Roll in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. The bands include Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs; Rose Tattoo; and the Angels. Many of the musicians involved got their start in professional or public performance in the late 1960s or early 1970s. As I wasn't old enough to go to liquor licenced venues where these bands would generallt ply their trade until the early 1980s I mainly got to know them through radio or recordings. So I missed the opportunity to see these artists perform live at their peak; except at the outdoor venue The Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne. And there, because it was usually packed, you didn't so much see as hear (and felt, due to the volume) the band play.
Most of these bands ended up on the recording artists' roster at Albert's: where the band AC/DC got their start. If the book is a little parochial it is because it is mostly written around these artists when they were either performing or recording while in Sydney; with a little backstory about their beginnings in either Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane or Sydney.
While a lot of the research is either first hand knowledge or disputable recollections by musicians and assorted camp followers who lived the rock and roll lifestyle it is entertaining and generally believable. A later, updated edition has been released.
