Review
This is one book I did not hesitate in buying. Since my days working for the State Library of Victoria, where my friend Jacques Kosky steered me in the direction of North Mississippi Hill Country Blues performed by the likes of Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside, I have been a fan of the output of Fat Possum Records. It turns out my cousin has a copy of this book; but even if I had been aware of that fact, this one is a keeper. Originally issued nearly 19 years before I bought it, the copy is in as new condition and I probably paid a premium for that. Never mind.
I finally got to read it one Sunday afternoon. It only took just over an hour to read: most of the text is recording artists' bios. the bios are what they are; a mixture of truth, tropes, fact, fiction, myth and monkey paws... Lines are blurred when people can't even read or write... or afford the pencil and book to write events in.
The book is a bio of photographs. On the copyright page the book is described (for libraries and booksellers) as Photography/Art. The photographer is David Raccuglia; the photographs are mainly monochrome and possibly best described as atmospheric. Sometimes album covers accompany the artist's bio; some photos are full colour; none are out of place.
