Website: Worldcat is my friend

Worldcat search engine
www.worldcat.org

I've been using the OCLC - Library of Congress - Worldcat database of media since the early 2000's.
When I told my dear friend and qualified librarian at the ADFA library that it was my secret source for citations, she rolled her eyes and shook her head...
Okay, Worldcat is a publicly modifiable wiki. And that means garbage in, garbage out.
Example: You can get an APA citation style for the books. So the APA Publication Manual should be entered in the APA style, right?
How come, then, there are hundreds or thousands of entries for the same edition of each book depending on the year?
...And a note on the Law Citation book: APA is good for humanities and social issues, but if you ever have to do policy or law work for government it's good to know your law citation, just in case!

Book: Developing office skills (Kerr Yates Rev-4e 2003)

Developing office skills (Rev. Fourth ed.)..
Kerr, N., & Yates, B. (2003). Developing office skills (Rev. 4th ed.). Frenchs Forest, N.S.W: Pearson Education Australia.

Following my time with Skills.net at the State Library of Victoria, being a tourist on a government wage and traveling all over the state, meeting people and showing them how to access and use the World Wide Web, I settled down for a short while as a community trainer working with seniors, single mums, disadvantaged, unemployed, and refugees. They were all lovely people to work with.
If there is one book I would have like to taught to them, and anyone over the age of 16 years, it is this one. Because sooner or later you will have to deal with government and govt. paperwork; and working through this book gives you an idea of what to expect.
My ownership of some of the other books goes back to my days as a trainee working for ABC Radio, because trying to push paperwork through a public service system is like trying to pick a miscreant sesame seed from a kilo tin of honey...

Book: Contexts of nursing (Daly Jackson Speedy 2e 2006).

Contexts of nursing: An introduction (2e 2006)
Daly, J., Jackson, D. B., & Speedy, S. (Eds.)(2006). Contexts of nursing: An introduction (Second edition). London: Elsevier.
ISBN 9780729537469

Contexts of Nursing is a multi-purpose book: it examines the Western History of Nursing; it looks at the current and future place of Nursing in the health system; and it examines the internal and external culture of Nursing as an organised group and as a profession. It is a very interesting read.
One area I found interesting: since 2010 I have acted as an unpaid carer of ageing relatives for long periods. Besides my housekeeping and financial duties of care and advocacy, I had to perform duties long associated with nursing. This is one method that the government is using to save money on the care of the aged as we live longer: getting family members to perform unpaid carer duties. There comes a point where carers need to let the professionals step in and take over: after reading this book, and if I had my time again, I'd probably let properly trained and paid nurses take over sooner.

When I joined the Skills.net team (Adrian & Sandie) in Vicnet at the State Library of Victoria in 1998, we were working toward a number of goals. The Internet and WWW were still relatively new, being in their first decade; modems to acces the Internet were still dial-up; and access could be very expensive outside Australian capital cities. It's hard to believe, but the beginnings of online social media were still at least five years away...
Our goals included: equitably funding community groups to train adults to access the WWW and use email (Skills.net); making sure disadvantaged members of our state received access to training and low-cost access to the web; community building with this new medium; and enabling change in communities.
For someone who'd been used to working in broadcast radio, a medium that had been going for over 80 years, understanding the communities I'd be working with and their needs was a lot to get my head around. So books on building communities, change in communities, and how to grow online communities, were sought out and read when I had the time. Because much of my time from 1998 to 2004 was spent out on the road visiting community groups across the state.

I got the Philosophy book first as I had returned to study with a full-time load and a lot of catching up to do. Ethics and the Media was one of four subjects in the first semester of my Masters degree and I needed to be able to get my head around some of the basics and the philosophical background of ethics. When the other two books came up in a second-hand bookstore not long after I was keen to snap them up.

Australia has moved from a country of primary production and manufacturing, to supply, warehousing, distribution and logistics. I've worked for a Small-Medium enterprise that acted as a national distributor of imported goods; and I've worked for a multinational NGO that supplied their national chain of second-hand shops. And being the project manager of a $1.3m government information roadshow meant that I had to make, lease or buy everything from an internet-enabled caravan to the six forms of insurance to cover the caravan being out on the road. Therefore, reading these books on Purchasing and Supply Management, Contract Law (Aus) and Logistics has helped me understand how these systems work; the books enabled me to talk to professionals in these fields in language they understand; and they've given me a good understanding of the options of which contractto use when planning involves signing contracts for making, leasing, or buying goods or services.

When I worked for ABC Radio in the 1980s and 1990s it was going through major technological changes. TV moved from film-based projection to analogue video tape in the 1980s. Then radio began the transition from analogue content capture, links and transmission, to digital audio. That meant once a recording was captured the editing and duplication on digital could take a matter of seconds or minutes, when it used to take hours or even days. And I was helping to introduce it. So the trainer needed training and Laird was one of the books I was given to read. I got my copy, of the second edition, around 2006.

Johnson, G., & Scholes, K. (2002). Exploring corporate strategy: [text and cases](sixth ed.). Harlow: Prentice Hall/Financial Times.

I first read this book while studying organisational change management as part of my Master of Arts (Communications) degree circa summer of 2006-2007 with a copy from the RMIT library. Shortly after finishing my Masters I picked up my copy and have referred to it on a couple of occasions since when planning strategic change.
All projects and businesses need plans: with a goal, a strategy, tactics, a SWOT analysis, communications and stakeholders; even a four-page plan is better than no plan. (Unless the plan is complete rubbish, like when I had to come in and fix the work of someone in government on a major change management project who had been trying to use an IAP2 community decision making model for the introduction and roll-out of asset management software to 1500 state-run government schools. Pick the right tool for the job: A tradesman doesn't use a hammer for cross-head screws, you must use the right style of plan for the job!) Therefore I recommend this book highly; whether you are involved in a small club, with three to four staff, or a major organisation with thousands of staff across many sites. Worth holding on to.

But if I could only take one book, between Exploring Corporate Strategy, Flawless Consulting, or One-to-One, to an island to read, it would be Exploring Corporate Strategy. Okay, they all serve different, but related, purposes. However, Exploring is the one book of the three that I keep going back to.

Unfortunately, if the Chapter (14) on Change management is an indication of the standard of research and editorial review for the rest of the book, this book should be avoided. However, while many authors of change management are too lazy or too stupid to read Kurt Lewin's 1947 article and to understand why his simple model for change is Unfreeze-Change-Freeze, the authors of the other chapters do appear to have something useful to write about.
Not a long read; but gives some insight as to how Australian Public Service (Federal) and Public Sector Governance has moved from being process-focussed (1901 until 1970s), then managerial-focussed (1980s); client-focussed (early 1990s) to being market-focussed (mid-late 1990s)(see p.178)

Although I got this book circa 2006 I didn't begin to read it until 2011. Its author appears to have plenty of experience in Europe; the title by Dobie (see below) has more of an Australian slant. Whichever, both are highly readable, well researched and informative. The PMBOK book is the handbook for Project Managers (PMs) but these titles are a great read.

This book is a great read. So much of our healthcare systems are devoted to acute care because acute care gets the headlines, gets the votes, and gets the money. Yet so many of us live with chronic health issues; even if it is only a mild chronic pain from an old injury it can have life changing implications.
I use mini post-it notes, instead of highlighter pens, to mark sections and ideas that I want to make note of or return to later. I must have got through half a pad of post-its on this book.
Besides being a good read this book is well-researched and cites previous authors' work where appropriate. I will keep it as I would like to return to it one day as it taught me much about how carers and the health care system needs to view those with chronic illness from a person-centered care approach.

The sponsorship seeker's toolkit (1999)

Grey, A.-M., & Skildum-Reid, K. (1999). The sponsorship seeker's toolkit. Sydney: McGraw Hill.
ISBN 9780074707074

I'd been working at the State Library of Victoria with Adrian Bates as my manager and Sandie Downey as my colleague on a fantastic community internet training project known as Skills.net. We had $5m to pass on to community organisations in $10k grants so they could train 100 adult members of their community in the basics of how to use the internet and email. These funds were provided by the Victorian State Government and were offered in funding rounds of up to 40 grants at a time. The project had started in late 1997 and I joined the team in May 1998 working from the offices in the SLV set aside for another community internet project: a Community Internet Service Provider (ISP) known as Vicnet.
At the time I bought this book about 100 projects had been funded. We would fund about another 350 projects from the original $5m as the government department overseeing the program had funded a couple of model projects to the tune of $100k each. Even then Adrian knew we needed to source more funding and I happened on this book fresh from the printers. Having worked as a producer for ABC Radio I called the publisher and enquired if there was a book tour as the authors lived interstate. Sure enough there was, and I was able to secure an informative hour with the authors as they gave us their thoughts on what we should be doing as best practice in sponsorship. It must have had some impression because Adrian, with a little help from me, eventually got more than $16m in funding for other projects between 1999-2004 when the SLV closed us down. The target for Skills.net training was 100,000 adults: our online registration showed over 108,000 adults had received Skills.net training by September 2004.

Book: Principles of Marketing (Kotler 6e 1994)

Principles of Marketing

Kotler, P., & Armstrong, G. (1994). Principles of marketing. London: Prentice-Hall.
ISBN

The go-to guy for Academic Textbooks on Marketing would have to be Philip Kotler. This is the book that got me started on planning to go back to study. I hadn't completed my undergraduate BSc but I put in three years' study with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that should have counted as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) towards a BA in Media Studies. While working for the Victorian Department of Premier & Cabinet I was approached by the head of a department at RMIT to do postgraduate studies in Online Communications. At that stage I didn't have the time for study: I was spending two weeks of every month on the road. But reading this copy of Kotler (Kotler & Armstrong 6e 1994) I began to get an interest in further studies that lead to me completing a Master of Arts in Communications once my series of contracts at the State Library of Victoria had ended. At the SLV my work was about providing social change and communication for Vicnet, Skills.net, and GO Vic projects across the state of Victoria.

Anything by Kotler: it all comes down to the RPIE model from the late 1980's onward (RPIE: Research Plan Implement Evaluate). I have one of Kotler's books from 1976 and the methodology is Analysis, Planning and Control; then there is PIC: Plan Implement Control; another link was to APIE: Analysis Plan Implement Evaluate and then there was a brief text from South African authors that promoted PIE: Plan Implement Evaluate.
Much of this form of project marketing methodology is based on Project Management or Hierarchy of Effects and may have begun with the work of early advertising and publicity expert Elias St Elmo Lewis: AIDA: Awareness Interest Desire Acquisition.
Jeffrey M. Hiatt used ADKAR (Awareness Desire Knowledge Ability Reinforcement) when he made the transistion of his training material publishing company to a Change Management business: ProSci.
Hiatt, J. M. (2006). ADKAR: A model for change in business, government and our community [Awareness desire knowledge ability reinforcement]. Loveland, Colo: Prosci Learning Center.
Peter Reed wrote a very good introductory text on marketing for Australian readers; I gave my copy to someone I used to see regularly in a small NSW country town who was thinking about taking a course that would include marketing:
Reed, P. W. (1992). Marketing planning and strategy. Sydney: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich.
Stanton, W. J., Miller, K. E., & Layton, R. A. (1994). Fundamentals of marketing (Third Edition). Sydney, N.S.W: McGraw-Hill Book Co. . The book I read after Reed; the Worldcat entry says it is over 770 pages but I don't remember it being quite that big and it is another book I passed over to a worthy recipient.

A couple more Kotler books I read: Kotler, P., & Roberto, E. L. (1989). Social marketing: Strategies for changing public behavior. New York: Free Press.

Sections include proper forms of address, formal dinners and receptions, national emblems, coats of arms, the Australian Defence Force, foreign trade and social relations."

Cats. Guitars. Boogie. My three hobbies and loves of my life. And (too much) reading.
Weber's hip amp book: Gerald Weber (Kendrick Amplifiers) has written a number of books on restoring and modifying guitar amps; but this one appealed to me the most.
It is the most dog-eared book in my collection of music and guitar related books; it is always next to my chair (along with a couple of collections of A4 schematic copies) for handy reference. There are tons of notes in the front and back covers and into the back pages. The only other music gear related books that have got such treatment from me are by Darr and by Legg, and my anthology of Rolling Stones songs where I have noted various tunings of guitars and other stringed folk instruments.
I have quite a collection of guitar history and production books: so watch this space!

Organizational transitions: Managing complex change.
Beckhard, R., & Harris, R. T. (1998). Organizational transitions: Managing complex change. Reading, Mass: Addison-Wesley.
ISBN 9780201108873

One of the main reference books for my postgraduate studies in communications, 'Beckhard and Harris' is a good starting point as a reference text for understanding the management of change. I like change management books that consider the psychological impact on people undergoing Organisational Change Management (OCM); some of the books on OCM I read give little consideration to people but are tailored around unidirectional marketing methodologies or are really off topic in their purpose...
I like a Kotter-Lewin-Bridges approach to Change. Kotter has Eight (8) Steps; Lewin presented change in Three (3) Steps; and Bridges takes a psychological approach in Three (3) Steps. Don't forget a couple of things about Kurt Lewin's change model: (1) Unfreezing-Moving-Freezing: if you see it presented in another format you know the author is a lazy idiot who can't be bothered doing a bit of basic research; and (2) Lewin first presented (published) this model circa 1947 (see p.34 of the journal; that is p.32 of the PDF.).

Even 'minor' issues like coping with change are explained well in chapters that cover topics such as stress and coping disorders.

Book: Grief counselling and grief therapy (Worden 3e 2003)

Grief counselling and grief therapy a handbook for the mental health practitioner
Worden, W. J. (2005). Grief counselling and grief therapy: A handbook for the mental health practitioner. London : Routledge
ISBN 9781583919415

I first read my copy of this book between 2009-2011. I picked it up just a month ago and after I finished it I came to the same conclusion I had before: this is a fantastic text that should be widely read.
I've faced the loss of close and extended family; sometimes it hits you hard emotionally, sometimes you get on with your life and deal with the loss a little at a time. Dealing with the emotional upheaval of having to make financial, medical and lifestyle decisions for an ageing relative can also be very hard. But having read, and re-read, this very readable book makes it a little easier.
One of Bill Worden's most important concepts is working through mourning with four tasks of grief. Grief never quite leaves us, but it can be integrated into our lives instead of emotionally consuming us. In my copy of this third edition (3e 2003) from page 25 forward (p25ff) Worden outlines why mourning is a process, not discreet stages, and how four completed tasks indicate how we have coped with loss. In this section Worden makes reference to his colleague Elizabeth Kübler-Ross and her often cited work On death and dying. The follow-up work by Kübler-Ross, Questions and answers on death and dying, supports Worden's theory that mourning and grief experienced by those not facing imminent death is not experienced in discrete stages.
Where all this helps my professional life in communications is when I have to deal with groups who are undergoing some sort of workplace or environmental change. For some individuals in any group, the process of change is just another life event; for others, change may bring about undesired emotional upheaval and they need to work through their emotions to get through the process of change.
I had read this book before I read Albert Roberts' Crisis intervention handbook: Assessment, treatment, and research and some of the books on practical and clinical psychiatry, psychology, and counselling.
Plus, it really helped me understand dealing with personal loss.
Highly recommended. And if you have time there are a series of short video interviews with Bill Worden on public social media. They are worth a look.

Read and finished Dec 2018-Feb 2019
The book is aimed at providing a practical introduction to the Vocational Education and Training field of Disability Care (Cert 111, Cert IV, Diploma).

It is not uncommon for these types of book to be poor in research or lack formal citation that would be found in a peer reviewed academic textbook. Therefore, I was somewhat disappointed, but not surprised, when I found the reference to Bill Worden's Tasks of Grieving being referred to (uncited) in Table 3.4 (p86) as "Stages of grief after acquiring a disability"; Worden was clear in his text (see p25ff) that the mourning process proceeds as tasks to be completed, not stages that are experienced.

Where the strengths of this book lie is in its organisation; its thorough coverage of a wide range of topics; and its classroom tasks and review for students who are working toward a vocational award. The manuscript constantly highlights the need to recognise patients and clients as individuals, with a person-centered approach to all tasks expected of the Disability Support Worker. It reminded me of the late Tom Kitwood's Dementia reconsidered: The person comes first: a book that should be read by anyone who comes into contact with individuals who are suffering dementia, acquired brain injury, or other mental health issues.

While it has a comprehensive bibliography, one book that should be added to the reader's list is Eckermann's Binan goonj: Bridging cultures in aboriginal health (2e 2006).

An overview of the National Standards
Six National Standards
There are six National Standards that apply to disability service providers.
1. Rights: The service promotes individual rights to freedom of expression, self-determination and decision-making and actively prevents abuse, harm, neglect and violence.
2. Participation and Inclusion: The service works with individuals and families, friends and carers to promote opportunities for meaningful participation and active inclusion in society.
3. Individual Outcomes: Services and supports are assessed, planned, delivered and reviewed to build on individual strengths and enable individuals to reach their goals.
4. Feedback and Complaints: Regular feedback is sought and used to inform individual and organisation-wide service reviews and improvement.
5. Service Access: The service manages access, commencement and leaving a service in a transparent, fair, equal and responsive way.
6. Service Management: The service has effective and accountable service management and leadership to maximise outcomes for individuals.
Definitions
This section lists a number of common terms and describes how they are used within the National Standards.
Continuous improvement – the term ‘continuous improvement’ describes the ongoing effort of an organisation to improve services, systems, processes or products to maximise benefits for its clients. The process of continuous improvement relies on evidence-based information to support the organisation’s success in achieving its goals and outcomes. This also means adapting to changing needs of the community or people using services.
Cultural competency – the term ‘cultural competency’ describes individuals and organisations with a set of behaviours, attitudes, knowledge, skills, practices and processes which enable effective work in cross-cultural settings. It is more than cultural awareness. It means that individuals and organisations are proactive, rather than responsive, regarding cultural diversity to ensure effective and relevant service delivery or supports.
Dignity of risk – the term ‘dignity of risk’ promotes each person’s autonomy and self-determination to make their own choices, including the choice to take some risks in life.
Family, friends and carers – the term ‘family, friends and carers’ recognises the importance of connection with family and friends, as well as the caring roles played by family, friends and carers. The word ‘family’ is inclusive of partners or significant others as well as parents, siblings, children and other family members.
Individual – the term ‘individual’ is used to describe the person who uses a service or support. This is primarily people with disability who use a service or support. The word ‘individual’ may also mean a family member or carer, for example, in the case of people using respite services. ‘Individual’ is used instead of words such as ‘consumer’, ‘client’ or ‘service user’.
Outcomes – the term ‘outcomes’ describes the impact or result of a service or support, such as an improvement in an individual’s wellbeing. ‘Outcomes’ can be distinguished from ‘outputs’. Outputs describe the delivery of services or supports, such as the provision of training. Outcomes can be short-term (such as an individual being involved in service planning) through to long-term (such as an individual finding employment after completing a course).
Minimal restriction – the term ‘minimal restriction' or 'minimal intervention’ recognises any restrictions on choice and control should be minimal and evidence based. Clear information should be provided to people with disability, their families and carers so that restrictions are transparent and easily understood.
People with disability – it is recognised that not all people with disability use services and supports and so the term ‘people with disability’ is used to refer to people with disability in the community generally.
Person-centred – the term ‘person-centred’ describes service and supports that are centred on an individual and their strengths, needs, interests and goals. Person-centred service delivery ensures that people with disability lead and direct the services and supports they use.
Quality management – the term ‘quality management’ describes the systems and processes an organisation has in place to monitor, review, plan, control and ensure quality of services, supports or products.
Reflection – the term ‘reflection’ refers to activities that individuals, teams and organisations undertake to learn from practice and action. This can be undertaken formally or informally as part of professional development or quality management.
Service and supports – the term ‘service and supports’ describes the distinction between ‘services’ (such as specialist and mainstream service delivery) and ‘supports’ (which are other measures that a person may use to live a full life such as brokering and mentoring). For simplicity, the National Standards refer to disability organisations, organisations and agencies as 'service providers'. An individual may use more than one service provider.

Library Redux 2019

It's now 2019 and almost 5 years since I tested this blog. Back then I was still becoming familiar with the medium and other online tools, like cloud storage. I also have a Wordpress site dedicated to an overview and review of one of my guitar amps - the Fender '93 Super Amp - that has been repurposed from a reflection of some of the textbooks that I have read since I started my postgraduate studies in communications.
In the years since I first used and reused this site I've deleted most of my social media accounts due to safety and privacy concerns; broken and bought a number of PCs; started using cloud services for Standard Office Environment software as a service, and for online storage; bought and used Network Attached Storage for file server and media server purposes; and bought a Macbook that I've used for this post.
Today the Google corporation reminded me that I still had this blog site available through making available some features to do with search indexing. Since I stopped using the Wordpress site for my library and reading review, and since I could do with a reminder of what I've read, I've decided to repurpose this site for that role.
The Endnote library I had is now in cold storage because the Toshiba laptop it was on is now replacement parts in other recycled PCs. I do have four folios of handwritten notes on text books I've read since 2006: this blog will help me bring some of these to a more accessible format. I will use Worldcat to identify the books and use the APA style for bibliographic notes.
Most of the books that are in my library have been bought from second-hand book stores and recycling stores (thrift shops). The sad fact is that many books, especially text books, are cheaper to purchase secondhand than a daily newspaper is to buy...
Thanks for taking the time to read and comment on any of my book research. This is not a formal research project; it is simply to keep track of what I have read from a growing library of books and an open curiosity of many subjects. I would like to show my respect and Acknowledge the Traditional Custodians and First Peoples of the Land on which this research and dialogue takes place.
