Review
This book brings back a lot of memories. It is about the Rock 'n' Roll scene in Melbourne, Australia, from around the late 1960's until the early 2000's. A lot changed over that 40 year period, especially our tastes in music.
Many of the 32 contributors are roughly the same age as me: late Baby-Boomers to Gen-X. For eight years from around 1978 I would attend live music venues around Melbourne, mainly in the south and east, on a weekly basis. Often it was out of habit; sometimes I would be chasing down an artist or band I really enjoyed.
However, I love Country and Blues more than Big Hair and Pop, so I often attended those events outside my region without a social circle from my local age group. Maybe I should have kept a diary...
The Rock Reader is personal accounts of a life lived and shared, often through the free street press that I began to read earnestly and regularly from about 1995 on; until my Masters Degree studies diverted my attention from 2006.
The local street press included Beat magazine and InPress - both titles are no longer available.
When the Rock Reader was published (2008) both magazines were widely available; and the contributors of the 32 stories that make up the Rock Reader also contributed to many local media outlets. I really enjoyed this book, as I have spent a couple of weeks in a new role that has required a lot of reading of Standard Operational Procedure manuals. I've enjoyed the break from instruction manuals and have reminisced through the shared the memories that made us. If you see a copy: pick it up. I found mine at a thrift store and I got a bargain!
What follows is a summarized table of contents. You'll note I've added a kind of shorthand
to denote 'Story#/Page', i.e. 06/27 is Christie Eliezer's contribution: Story #06 beginning
on Page 27... So here it is (I haven't seen a ToC published elsewhere).
