Book: Midnight Riders (Freeman, 1995)

Midnight Riders : the story of the Allman Brothers Band

Freeman S. (1995). Midnight Riders : the story of the Allman Brothers Band (1st ed.). Little Brown.
ISBN 9780316292887, 0316292885

Review
Scott Freeman is a good story-teller: a very good story teller... maybe not so much a music critic; but...
We're here to talk about the rise and fall of the Allman Brothers Band, a band that I was into quite early. From memory, the first Duane Allman anthology double album was amont the first 20 vinyl albums I bought back in the 70's; when Monash Uni had a neat little record store and I made the mistake of trying to complete a Bachelor of Science. And we're here to talk about the book.
The book, Midnight Riders : the story of the Allman Brothers Band, seems to be well researched. Freeman has interviewed many of the key actors; not just relied on third-hand anecdotes and unreliable media. The research includes articles; books; court and arbitration records; police records; and close sources. These are detailed at the end of the book along with discographies that include early and later band albums; studio work by the players for other artists (notable appearances); solo albums; influences; and a useful section entitled Southern-Fried Rock. The book ends with a couple of pages noting two fan clubs based in Macon, GA.; along with places worth visiting at the time of publication, including a small record store and the soul-food restaurant that support the band when they couldn't afford food after buying a round of beers.
The book is not just about the band, however, it is about: the boys' tough upbringing; their families; their inner circle; the scourge of drug-use by the players; about the ramifications of drug dealing; about the rise and fall of Capricorn Records; and about the many wives, girlfriends, children, and groupies of the band over the journey. The book finishes in 1995: there was still a long road ahead for the players, and it didn't end well for some.
Having finished the book relatively quickly I yearn for more. I'm not sure anything is available that covers the remaining band in the period since 1995, apart from what we find on the web. I am about to pass this book on because it is a great resource to be shared in our music community.

Book: Blood, Sweat & Beers (Engleheart, 2010)

Blood, Sweat & Beers

Engleheart, M. (2010). Blood, Sweat & Beers: Oz rock from the Aztecs to Rose Tattoo. Pymble, N.S.W: HarperCollins.
ISBN 9780732289355

Review
Author Murray Engleheart (cf) has, for me, done a fine job of describing the growth and decline of a number of East Coast bands that were very important to Australian Rock and Roll in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. The bands include Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs; Rose Tattoo; and the Angels. Many of the musicians involved got their start in professional or public performance in the late 1960s or early 1970s. As I wasn't old enough to go to liquor licenced venues where these bands would generallt ply their trade until the early 1980s I mainly got to know them through radio or recordings. So I missed the opportunity to see these artists perform live at their peak; except at the outdoor venue The Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne. And there, because it was usually packed, you didn't so much see as hear (and felt, due to the volume) the band play.
Most of these bands ended up on the recording artists' roster at Albert's: where the band AC/DC got their start. If the book is a little parochial it is because it is mostly written around these artists when they were either performing or recording while in Sydney; with a little backstory about their beginnings in either Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane or Sydney.
While a lot of the research is either first hand knowledge or disputable recollections by musicians and assorted camp followers who lived the rock and roll lifestyle it is entertaining and generally believable. A later, updated edition has been released.

Book: In the Country of Country (Dawidoff, 1998)

In the Country of Country

Dawidoff, N. (1998). In the Country of Country. New York: Vintage Books.
ISBN 037570082X 9780375700828

Review
Nicholas Dawidoff has put in the academic hard yards to become a quality writer. His list of works include books involving deep research on American sports: Baseball and Football.
In the Country of Country is Dawidoff's attempt to give cultural credence to a genre of music - Country - that is apportioned to other predominately American popular music genres: Blues or Jazz; yet Country music seems to lack.
Except: there's Bill Malone's Country Music USA, that was first released in 1968. Dawidoff's book is not as academic in its written style as Malone's book is (I read the 1984 edition); but it is very well researched, as an extensive notes section at the end of the book attests.
However, Dawidoff's book comes across as populist to me, for one particular reason: he has chosen subjects about whom quite a lot has been written; but he deliberately chooses to ignore the contribution of one modern artist - Garth Brooks - as not worthy of inclusion due to Brook's success as a live performer and recorded artist.
I have to declare an interest here: I met and worked with Brooks around 1993 when I was a radio producer. He was charming, courteous, cooperative, interested and interesting to talk to behind the scenes. I have had to put up with some egos and ratbags while working in radio; as a guest Brooks didn't fall into either of those categories and would be welcome back anytime.
Dawidoff doesn't really explain why he chose to include certain artists and ignore others; though his storytelling style makes for an excellent read about those artists and genres he does cover. In the interests of proper journalism, he should have at least interviewed Brooks even if the final piece was limited to just a paragraph or two.

Review
I became aware of Clinton Walker's quality of work when I read Buried Country (1e) in 2019. So, when I saw a copy of Highway to Hell in a thrift shop recently, I grabbed it.
Much of the fate of Bon Scott, and his work with AC/DC, is well known. Where Highway to Hell shines is establishing Bon Scott's life, start in music, songwriting, and the truth about his final days.
By the time I was old enough to see the band in licenced venues (pubs, clubs) they were already based overseas and working hard to become the international success they now are.

A great read.

Review
Until I read Washburn: Over one hundred years of fine stringed instruments I was unaware of how large and influential the Washburn group of companies has been to modern stringed instrument playing and production. Learning guitar in the 1980s in Australia, I was led to believe that Washburn was mainly Asian made instruments mass produced for the USA market; locally (in Australia), they were considered a budget brand. (Don't forget: it was during this time that the Fender brand was probably saved by Japanese production and export.) Now I understand that Washburn has been a foundational producer of a wide range of musical instruments that can trace its production and sales back to the late nineteenth century. I have a strong respect for the author and researcher John Teagle because of a small, but thoroughly researched, reference book on Fender guitar amplifier production until 1995 (see his Fender Amps book, below).

Blues: An Anthology (Handy, 1926/2001)

Blues: An Anthology (Handy, 1926/2001)

Handy, W. C., Niles, A., and Covarrubias, M. (2001). Blues: An Anthology. Bedford, Mass: Applewood Books.
ISBN 1557095213 9781557095213
aka: Blues : the most famous blues collection.
Edited by W.C. Handy ; with an introduction by Abbe Niles;
Illustrations by Miguel Covarrubias

Review
Purchased just over two weeks before I wrote this review, this book has turned out to be a fascinating journey on a number of levels...
I thought my copy was written or compiled on, or around 2001: because that is the publishing date of the edition I bought. I also thought the 48-page introduction of my book may have been written around 2000: the original manuscript, both the introduction and the collection, was written on, or around, 1926. I thought all the musical scores were going to be by WC Handy: I was surprised to learn they are not (and not all would be considered blues in this day and age).
The book I purchased is not called Blues: An Anthology on the cover; it is known by the alternate title Blues: the most famous blues collection.I learned that there had been a number of editions of this book published: the first edition published in 1926; then 1949, 1978, 1990, 2001, 2012; and possibly more.
And I learned that songs (musical pieces) had been added or removed from later editions, compared to the (1926) first edition (see an edited version of the music scores collated in the edition I bought, below).

So: not everything was as it seemed from my first impression of the book. But that is not a bad thing when online research, and dedicated bloggers, can provide so many answers.
As a fan of music genres (including blues, country and roots music) I am well aware of WC Handy's contribution to the blues genre (that is, he was most likely the first African American to publish blues music scores in the English language that became widely available in the early 20th Century).
It appears that Handy's friendship and collaboration with New York lawyer and music critic Abbe Niles may have contributed to Handy's ability to bring blues print music to a wider audience. Niles was a prolific collector and published critic of what was known as 'race' records (recordings), with performances by African American artists, specifically marketed to African Americans. Niles' valuable contribution to folk, roots, and blues music was as a critic and scholar regularly published in magazines targetted at white, middle-class audiences. That is why I am somewhat surprised by the inclusion of a number of works by composers such as Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, and George and Ira Gershwin; who were known mainly for their work for stage and screen musicals; not for blues music.
While Handy has secured an entry on Wikipedia, it is surprising that Niles has not (a Wiki search reveals he appears in many other entries). Niles' lengthy introduction to Handy's book tries to explain what is, for the time, a relatively unknown genre of music. After all, the book was published just four years after the BBC radio first went to air; and six years before the BBC first transmitted TV (to a very limited audience).
It is worth seeking further information on Niles through recent blog entries; and comforting to know that much of his work seems to have been preserved.
A story of the collaboration between Handy and Niles, along with their friendship, would be a welcome addition to my collection.

Book: Rock Reader: Underneath the Riffs (Young & Jenkins, 2008).

Rock Reader: Underneath the Riffs

Young, M., & Jenkins, J. (2008). Rock reader: Underneath the riffs. Melbourne: Wilkinson Publishing.
ISBN 9781921332432

Review
This book brings back a lot of memories. It is about the Rock 'n' Roll scene in Melbourne, Australia, from around the late 1960's until the early 2000's. A lot changed over that 40 year period, especially our tastes in music.
Many of the 32 contributors are roughly the same age as me: late Baby-Boomers to Gen-X. For eight years from around 1978 I would attend live music venues around Melbourne, mainly in the south and east, on a weekly basis. Often it was out of habit; sometimes I would be chasing down an artist or band I really enjoyed.
However, I love Country and Blues more than Big Hair and Pop, so I often attended those events outside my region without a social circle from my local age group. Maybe I should have kept a diary...
The Rock Reader is personal accounts of a life lived and shared, often through the free street press that I began to read earnestly and regularly from about 1995 on; until my Masters Degree studies diverted my attention from 2006.
The local street press included Beat magazine and InPress - both titles are no longer available.
When the Rock Reader was published (2008) both magazines were widely available; and the contributors of the 32 stories that make up the Rock Reader also contributed to many local media outlets. I really enjoyed this book, as I have spent a couple of weeks in a new role that has required a lot of reading of Standard Operational Procedure manuals. I've enjoyed the break from instruction manuals and have reminisced through the shared the memories that made us. If you see a copy: pick it up. I found mine at a thrift store and I got a bargain!
What follows is a summarized table of contents. You'll note I've added a kind of shorthand
to denote 'Story#/Page', i.e. 06/27 is Christie Eliezer's contribution: Story #06 beginning

Book: The technique of radio production (McLeish, 1989)

The technique of radio production: A manual for broadcasters (2nd ed.)

Review
I can't believe I spent about twenty percent of my weekly wage on such a small book circa 1989; but then again I was a once a trainee in radio production and being groomed as a trainer at the time and this book was, and still is, an excellent source.
Broadcast radio content and programming in Australia, especially commercial stations on the AM band, differed somewhat from the UK: where this book was published. But there are many basic similarities in production techniques.

Review
Mum (Val) loved statistics... I think that gene (you know, the "I love stats" gene) skipped a generation in my case... I have used Excel up to around MS Office 2000 for small business and project budgeting; and for a digital photograph repository for using mail-merge to create catalogues (that was using Excel v4; then I swapped to tables in MS Word 2000 from memory). I did use the spreadsheet function in MS Works for Windows 3.1 (remember MS Works?) but it was fairly limited.
Then came Excel 2007, and it was a game-changer. There were a huge amount of features added as PC memory sizes grew exponentially and cpus could handle multiple tasks. I got this copy (cheaply!) mainly to study up on the statistics chapter; it has taken over ten years for me to finally pick up the book and read it cover to cover. I can understand why it took so long. It is an excellent reference, except... there are a lot of flaws in the editing of the examples. Simple things like changing a "$" sign to an "E" (p.801) could really mess with a reference. You have been warned. Use at your discretion.

A long time ago, around the time I was reading Byte Magazine, I saw a couple of copies of The HP-12C Pocket Guide: Just In Case. It had been recommended in Byte as in the mid-1980s Personal Computers were still running with less than 1Meg of RAM and spreadsheets were still a novelty. I was earning a meagre wage as a radio producer and I wanted to learn how to manage my income better, and using PCs and calculators seemed the way of the future.
In the days before the internet and access to online tutorials, little pocket books like this were very handy: even if you didn't own the hardware it related to. It was a pared-down version of a larger tutorial book: An easy course in using the HP-12C and other HP financial calculators.
Considering this little book was held in such high esteem by its reviewer, it seems strange that Worldcat doesn't seem to identify its ISBN or any copies in any library. I was able to trace the authors and the larger book through Worldcat. I have included the ISBN off the back of the smaller book; and some others attributed to it but still not functional.
