I'd been working at the State Library of Victoria with Adrian Bates as my manager and Sandie Downey as my colleague on a fantastic community internet training project known as Skills.net. We had $5m to pass on to community organisations in $10k grants so they could train 100 adult members of their community in the basics of how to use the internet and email. These funds were provided by the Victorian State Government and were offered in funding rounds of up to 40 grants at a time. The project had started in late 1997 and I joined the team in May 1998 working from the offices in the SLV set aside for another community internet project: a Community Internet Service Provider (ISP) known as Vicnet.
At the time I bought this book about 100 projects had been funded. We would fund about another 350 projects from the original $5m as the government department overseeing the program had funded a couple of model projects to the tune of $100k each. Even then Adrian knew we needed to source more funding and I happened on this book fresh from the printers. Having worked as a producer for ABC Radio I called the publisher and enquired if there was a book tour as the authors lived interstate. Sure enough there was, and I was able to secure an informative hour with the authors as they gave us their thoughts on what we should be doing as best practice in sponsorship. It must have had some impression because Adrian, with a little help from me, eventually got more than $16m in funding for other projects between 1999-2004 when the SLV closed us down. The target for Skills.net training was 100,000 adults: our online registration showed over 108,000 adults had received Skills.net training by September 2004.
